Weekend Box Office Roundup
Weekend Box Office Top Ten:
A QUIET PLACE is #1 with a huge $50M (Million) domestic debut, and an impressive $71M global opening. This is well above where tracking had the film pegged, and with a budget of only $17M plus marketing costs, means this original horror title is already profitable for Paramount, with much more to be earned.
READY PLAYER ONE is #2 with $25M, a slide of only -40% from its first weekend, to bring the domestic total to $96.9M, and worldwide to a big $391M, with the film set to cross the $400M mark globally tomorrow. China continues to be the biggest single territory so far, but with the film playing so well with strong domestic holds and international, at a budget of $175M plus marketing it will definitely be a nicely profitable hit for WB.
BLOCKERS is #3 with a debut of $21.4M domestic, and $32.1M worldwide, above where tracking had it, and another case where R-rated comedy has rebounded this year, continuing the upward trend. With a budget of only $21M plus marketing costs, this will be a nice hit for Universal.
BLACK PANTHER held at #4 with $8.4M, a domestic total of $655.3M, and a worldwide total now of $1.299 Billion. Produced for $200M plus marketing, this has exceeded even Marvel and Disney's wildest dreams as the biggest superhero film of all-time domestically.
I CAN ONLY IMAGINE is #5 with $8.3M, and a total now of $69M, among the best showings ever for a Faith-based hit.
TYLER PERRY'S ACRIMONY slipped to #6 with $8M, to bring the Lionsgate film to a very solid $31.3M so far, and more to be earned, right in range with Perry's other non-comedic fare.
CHAPPAQUIDDICK is #7 with a debut of $6.2M, a good result which is well above where tracking had it pegged prior to opening. As it skews older, the film should have a decent hold next weekend as well.
SHERLOCK GNOMES fell to #8 with $5.6M, a domestic total of just $33.8M, and $45.7M worldwide. With a budget of $59M, this will definitely be a financial loss for all involved.
PACIFIC RIM UPRISING is #9 with $4.9M, a domestic total of only $54.9M, and $267M globally. At a too-big budget of $150M plus marketing, it will be a sharp financial loss.
ISLE OF DOGS is #10 with $4.6M, to bring the film's total to $12M as it expands, currently in 554 theaters.
Next weekend sees debuts for RAMPAGE, TRUTH OR DARE, and OVERBOARD as April continues to be busy at the box office ahead of AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR at the end of the month.
