Weekend Box Office Roundup
Weekend Box Office Top 10:
BLACK PANTHER is #1 with $108M (Million), the second biggest second weekend ever behind only THE FORCE AWAKENS, and a drop of just -46% vs. its record debut last week. The domestic total now stands at $400M, as the film will eclipse both CIVIL WAR and IRON MAN 3 to become the 2nd biggest Marvel film domestically, and make a play to unseat THE AVENGERS at number one. Worldwide is $704M, as the film will now undoubtedly cross the $1 Billion mark with ease, in a stunning win for Marvel.
GAME NIGHT opened at #2 with $16.6M domestic, and an early $21.8M worldwide with most international yet to debut. Produced for $37M plus marketing, this is a decent result which will depend on how well it holds next weekend, and how it plays overseas. Audience score of B+ shows that word of mouth is good. PETER RABBIT held on at #3 with $12.5M, a domestic total of $71.2M, with international yet to roll out on this Sony film. Produced for $50M plus marketing, this will definitely be profitable for the studio. ANNIHILATION opened at #4 with $11M, an okay start for this $40M film from Paramount given that the studio mitigated its costs by selling international rights to Netflix for an undisclosed sum. FIFTY SHADES FREED is #5 with $6.9M, a domestic total of $89.5M, and a global haul of $320M. Produced for $55M plus marketing, this final installment of the trilogy has become nicely profitable for Universal, another hit for the studio. Produced for $80M plus marketing, this Fox hit has become very nicely profitable across the globe. EVERY DAY opened at #9 with $3.1M -- an okay start for this film which cost only $5M plus $8M in marketing which focused on digital. If the film can reach around the $10M mark theatrically it'll be in good shape, as digital rentals/sales is where the profit is supposed to be made for Orion. EARLY MAN is #10 with $1.7M, and a total of only $6.7M for Lionsgate, which distributed but did not finance the film. Next weekend sees debuts for RED SPARROW and DEATH WISH, as Black Panther will continue to be the king of the box office across the world once again.
