Weekend Box Office Roundup
Weekend Box Office Top 10:
BLACK PANTHER is #1 for the fifth weekend in a row, the first film to achieve this since James Cameron's AVATAR in 2009. With $27M (Million) this weekend, the film has now earned $605.4M in the U.S., and $1.182 Billion worldwide. By next weekend, it will topple THE AVENGERS to become the highest-grossing superhero film in the United States ever, not adjusted for inflation.
TOMB RAIDER opened at #2 with $23.5M, slightly ahead of where tracking suggested it would land on the high end. International kicked in a much, much larger $102.5M, to bring the global debut to $126M total. Produced for $94M plus marketing, this film has a long ways to go before becoming profitable, and will have to rely on international grosses. I CAN ONLY IMAGINE surprised with an opening at #3, bringing in a big $17M. This Faith-based film cost just $7M plus a modest marketing campaign, and looks to be the big Christian hit of the season ala MIRACLES FROM HEAVEN, and THE SHACK, as it will play well into the Easter holiday. A WRINKLE IN TIME slipped to #4 with $16.5M, a domestic total of $61M, and an early $71M worldwide with most territories yet to debut. Produced for $100M plus marketing costs, it looks unlikely this will be profitable for Disney. LOVE, SIMON opened at #5 with an "okay" $11.5M, on the low end of expectations. Produced for $17M, it is unlikely to be profitable for Fox, which will see a moderate financial loss in the teen romantic comedy. GAME NIGHT held at #6 with $5.5M, a decline of just -29%, to bring the domestic total to $54.1M, and $84.6M worldwide. Produced for $37M plus marketing, the film is close to reaching profitability thanks to its strong holds and a decent international run. PETER RABBIT is #7 with $5.2M, a decline of only -23%, for a domestic tally of $102.4M, and $145M worldwide. Produced for $50M plus marketing, this has become a nice solid family hit for Sony. STRANGERS: PREY AT NIGHT is #8 with $4.8M, and a total of $18.6M so far, with international yet to debut. Produced for just $5M plus marketing costs, this film should prove profitable to all involved. RED SPARROW fell to #9 with $4.4M, a domestic total of only $39.5M, and $106M worldwide. With a budget of $69M plus marketing, this is looking like a modest financial loss for Fox, and continues star Jennifer Lawrence's struggles at the box office in the last couple of years. DEATH WISH is #10 with $3.3M, and a total of $29.9M, with international yet to debut on this $30M action/thriller. The film will have to rely on worldwide grosses to become profitable. Next weekend sees debuts for PACIFIC RIM: UPRISING and SHERLOCK GNOMES, and should see the King of Wakanda yield the number one spot finally, ahead of the busy Easter weekend when READY PLAYER ONE debuts.
