Weekend Box Office Roundup

Weekend Box Office Top 10:

BLACK PANTHER is #1 for an impressive fourth weekend in a row, grossing $41.1M (Million) to bring the domestic total to $562M, and the global haul to a huge $1.078 Billion, after a great start in China. The final is currently the second biggest Marvel film ever domestically, and the fourth biggest worldwide, with that position likely to change before the end of its global run.

A WRINKLE IN TIME opened at #2 with a sluggish $33.3M debut, on the low end of expectations. Produced for $100M plus marketing, it will be up to decent holds and a strong international run to turn this profitable for Disney. STRANGERS: PREY AT NIGHT is #3 with a debut of $10.4M, surging past the initial tracking. Produced for $5M plus a moderate marketing campaign, this is a good start, but will depend on how the film holds during the week and next weekend to determine if it can reach profitability theatrically. RED SPARROW fell to #4 with $8.1M, a domestic total now of just $31.1M, and $82.9M worldwide. With a budget of $69M plus marketing, the film is unlikely to be profitable for Fox, looking more like a modest financial loss for the studio, and another underperformer from star Jennifer Lawrence. GAME NIGHT held at #5 with $7.9M, a decline of just -24%, to bring the domestic total to $45M, and $69.7M worldwide. With a budget of $37M plus marketing, the film may become profitable if it continues to hold and can match its domestic total overseas, where the film continues to roll out. PETER RABBIT is #6 with $6.8M, a domestic total now of $93.4M, and $119.6M worldwide, with most territories yet to debut. Produced for $50M plus marketing costs, this will definitely be profitable for Sony. DEATH WISH is #7 with $6.6M, and a total of only $23.8M. Produced for $30M plus marketing, it is unlikely this will be profitable, even when international is factored in later. HURRICANE HEIST is #8 opening with a disastrous $3.1M. Produced for $35M plus marketing, this will be a sharp financial loss for all involved. ANNIHILATION is #9 with $3.1M, and a total of $26M. Produced for $40M plus marketing costs, all international rights were sold to Netflix for an undisclosed sum, making it impossible to judge Paramount's exposure domestically. JUMANJI: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE is #10 with $2.7M, a domestic total of $397.2M, and $934M worldwide, as the $90M budgeted mega-hit winds down its theatrical run and spends its last weekend in the top ten. A sequel is already dated for December 2019. Next weekend sees debuts for TOMB RAIDER, and LOVE, SIMON each hoping to connect with their respective audiences.
