Weekend Box Office Top 10:
THOR: RAGNAROK is #1 with $56.6M (Million), a second weekend decline of just -53.9% to bring the domestic total to $211.5M and global to $650M and climbing. At a $180M budget plus marketing, the film is on track to become another of Marvel's biggest hits, with the only question being how high it climbs. The film is already profitable for Disney, with much more to be earned. DADDY'S HOME 2 opened at #2 with a terrific $30M weekend, giving Paramount a needed hit this holiday season. Produced for $69M plus marketing, the film will be nicely profitable thanks to both a strong multiple and Thanksgiving boost, plus international, where the original film brought in $92M and this one is expected to soar as high, if not higher. MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS opened at #3 also with a terrific start at $28.2M domestic, and a worldwide total of $85.4M. Produced for $55M plus marketing, this one will be a profitable hit for Fox, again thanks to its multiple and the global success, where more territories will be expanding next weekend. This is playing as a mature-themed alternative, and will have a good multiple over the coming weeks. A BAD MOM'S CHRISTMAS held at #4 with $11.5M, a decline of only -31.3%, to bring the domestic total to $39.8M, and worldwide to an early $46.5M with most of international yet to roll out. Produced for $28M plus marketing, this will be a profitable sleeper hit for STX much like the original. JIGSAW slid to #5 with $3.4M, bringing the domestic total to $34.3M, and worldwide to $79M. With a production cost of only $10M plus marketing, this is a nice horror hit for Lionsgate. TYLER PERRY'S BOO 2! A MADEA HALLOWEEN slid to #6 also from Lionsgate, with $2M for the weekend, and a total of $45.9M. The production cost was $25M plus a modest marketing campaign, and the film should be profitable as it falls right in line with other Madea entries, albeit on the lower end of the franchise. GEOSTORM is #7 with $1.5M, a domestic total of only $31.6M, and a worldwide total of $199M. From Skydance and Warner Bros., the film is going to be a sharp loss with its budget of $120M plus marketing, even with a decent international run, which couldn't help the domestic returns. BLADE RUNNER 2049 is #8 with $1.4M, a domestic total of $88M, and a global total of $243M. From Alcon, Sony, and Warner Bros., the film's pricetag of $150M plus marketing means it is going to be a big financial loss despite the critical acclaim.
HAPPY DEATH DAY is #9 with $1.3M, a domestic total of $54.9M, and a global total of $88.1M, another big hit for Universal and Blumhouse thanks to the horror film's pricetag of only $4.8M plus marketing.
LADYBIRD is #10 with $1.2M after expanding into 37 theaters for limited play, bringing the total to $1.7M. With a great per-theater average, this A24 release is set to be a decent indie success this fall and winter season.
Next weekend sees releases for JUSTICE LEAGUE, WONDER, and THE STAR, with all eyes on how high Warner Bros.' superhero epic soars both in the U.S. and globally, as the film's tracking and interest levels suggests this will be the biggest hit of the fall.
