Weekend Box Office Top 10:
JUSTICE LEAGUE opened at #1 with a disappointing $96M (Million) well below tracking and expectations. Global stands at $281M on this Zack Snyder superhero epic credited with a script by Joss Whedon and Chris Terrio. Warner Bros. will need much more to be profitable, with all eyes on how the film holds heading into the Thanksgiving holiday, and with weeks before THE LAST JEDI hits.
WONDER opened at #2 with a stunning $27M debut far ahead of expectations for Lionsgate and Participant Media. Expect this one to have strong legs in the coming weeks, as the first genuine surprise hit of the fall. THOR: RAGNAROK held at #3 with $21.7M, a domestic total now of $247.3M, and $738M globally. With a budget of $180M plus marketing, the film is already profitable for Marvel and Disney, and there is more to be earned. DADDY'S HOME 2 slid to #4 with $14.8M to bring the film's total to $50.5M, with international yet to open, and a Thanksgiving boost expected this week. Very strong results for Paramount on this family-friendly comedy sequel. With a budget of $69M plus marketing, it will be profitable thanks to a good domestic run and strong international results where the first film played very well. MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS slid to #5 with $13.8M, a domestic total of $51.7M, and a global total of $148M. Produced for $55M plus marketing, this Poirot adaptation written by Michael Green is poised to be profitable by next weekend, with still more to be earned, for a very solid return. Word is that Fox is already planning a sequel with director/star Kenneth Branagh. THE STAR opened at #6 with a so-so $10M for Sony, an okay result on this faith-based animated film which cost just $20M plus a modest marketing campaign. If it has a good multiple, and can match that internationally, the film will be just fine. A BAD MOM'S CHRISTMAS fell to #7 with $6.8M, to bring the domestic total to $50.9M, and worldwide to $77.5M. With a production cost of just $28M plus marketing, the film should be profitable by next weekend, in another win for STX. LADY BIRD is #8 with $2.5M after expanding into just 238 theaters now, bringing the total to $4.7M on this A24 indie title. With so much room for expansion plus an awards run coming, this could become a sleeper hit. THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI is #9 after expanding into a theater count of just 53 theaters, to bring the film's total to $1.5M. It will continue to expand in the coming weeks, hoping to capitalize and build on buzz. JIGSAW is #10 with $1M, to bring the domestic total to $36.4M, and worldwide to $88.8M. This Lionsgate horror film cost just $10M plus marketing, giving the studio another hit in the Saw franchise. This upcoming week sees the launch of Disney and Pixar's COCO in the United States after playing in several international territories early, as the Thanksgiving holiday looks to give every title a boost of the weekend.
