Creativity Sucks: Mark's Resource Roundup

Creativity sucks. Or maybe it’s just me. I take class after class. I get coverage. I read all the damn books. I watch movies over and over again. I read script upon script (most of them pretty bad) and I still can’t figure out how to develop my creativity. I know I need to do these things, but all I seem to learn are the elements that make up a good thriller or how to get through that tough second act, or how to write a killer opening.
But never, or rarely, do I learn about the actual process of being creative. And it ends up frustrating me. But there's no secret trick. You have to do all those things I mentioned before. You have to study, read, watch, and write till your eyes bleed. But the thing you have to do most is visualize. You have to throw yourself into the world of your story, you have to walk a mile in your protagonist’s shoes. Their journey is your journey. What motivates them? What motivates you?
I don’t know if I’m making any sense, but I do know that creativity does not show up on your doorstep. You have to hunt it down by using the tools of the trade. You have to format properly, you have to fix your plot when several people tell you it’s shit, and you have to fight for your writing time and stick to the schedule you chose for yourself. Then and only then you might discover that the creative muse lies in the in-between space of hard work and imagination.
Keep writing,
Mark

Parting Thought:
“The creative is the place where no one else has ever been. You have to leave the city of your comfort and go into the wilderness of your intuition. What you'll discover will be wonderful. What you'll discover is yourself.” ― Alan Alda
