Definition: The phobia and fear of writing are known as graphophobia. It is defined as an irrational dread and anxiety of writing. This is classed as a social phobia. Many phobic individuals are afraid of receiving criticism.
Graphophobia is the specific name given to this phobia. However, depending on the individual, and the reason for their fears, there might be a more specific name, such as; the fear of criticism, the fear of success, or kakorraphiophobia, which is the fear of failure.
There are various causes of graphophobia. Some people feel anxious about writing in public as they fear others observing them as they write. Some people fear being criticized for their handwriting, spelling or grammar when they write. Some individuals feel they are committing to things by putting their ideas on paper. Some writers experience anxiety as they face challenges such as; writer's block, not knowing where to start, not knowing if they can finish, fearing failure and criticism.
Some phobics may suffer from extreme distress, intense anxiety and dread of writing (what I call Tuesday). Some people may be so unnerved by the idea, that they experience panic attacks. If you are experiencing panic attacks, please seek professional help.
Look at the resource links for advice on how to handle your fear of writing.
Keep writing,
Mark
